Canada makes a stand

// November 27th, 2009 // No Comments » // News / Society

Nearly everyone knows that Canada itself is a very powerful country in its own right without the fact that it is in a strong relationship with the USA. Although Canada and the USA cooperate on military campaigns as well as foreign policies they do actually make many of their own decisions. there are two major decisions they have made that the USA really did not like

That is the choice to keep full relations with Cuba

The relations between Cuba and Canada go back way before the Cold war even started. Way back in the 18th century, Canada actually traded codfish as well as beer, rum and sugar with the Cubans. As well as this, Cuba was actually the first country in the Caribbean chosen by Canada for a diplomatic mission. In fact Canada and Mexico were the only two countries to keep uninterrupted relations with Cuba once the Cuban revolution had started in 1959. The USA kept trying to convince Canada to stop communications with the Cubans they still continue to have a good relationship with them. Canadians also love to go to Cuba on lesiure trips.

The decision not to take part in the Iraq War

This is something that would have hit the USA where it hurt due to the fact the countries are so close in the way the military is worked. Canada will not step foot into Iraq. It was never a good idea to go into that war to start with so perhaps Canada made the right decision there.

However Canada is a beautiful country to visit so if you fancy one of those Canadian holidays, or perhaps an escourted tours Canada or even if you are reading this and fancy an old fashioned USA holidays there is sure to be something out there for you.

The Highest Ranked Military Man Ever

// August 29th, 2009 // No Comments » // News / Society

John J. Pershing Trivia should be interesting to anyone who has an interest in American military history, as he is one of the most significant figures in the history of the armies of this country. John J. Pershing held the highest rank that any living soldier has ever held, the “General of the Armies”. However, did you know that in 1976, congress passed an act which changed the fact that he was the highest ranking soldier to ever have lived? In the interest of reverence for the founding father, the act stated that no solider in the history or future of the country would ever be considered to outrank George Washington.

You might not just find questions about John J. Pershing on a quiz about his life and times. Did you know that in addition to his own military prowess, (mostly displayed during World War I) he was also the primary mentor behind the great military minds of World War II, such as Patton, Eisenhower, Bradley, and Marshall? His influence extended far beyond his own military campaigns, and can be seen in almost every major American military action since the end of his active services.

John J. Pershing Trivia must extend beyond the list of his triumphs and achievements, and include facts about his early life. As many of the greatest soldiers have been, he was a West Point cadet, enrolling at the academy in 1882. He rose quickly through the ranks, and became First Captain which, for a cadet at the academy, was the highest rank possible. As befitted his rank he was a part of the honor guard at the funeral of President Grant.

Pershing served in many military campaigns. He fought against the apache, and became known as one of the most accurate shooters in the entire army. He put down Sioux uprising, and was present at Wounded Knee. He also spent time as a military instructor until returning to active duty.

John Pershing also served in the Spanish American and Philippine American wars, and in 1903 Theodore Roosevelt began to lobby for his promotion. In 1905, due to the hold ups which had delayed Pershing’s promotion, Roosevelt surprised everyone by using his presidential powers to promote Pershing directly to the rank of brigadier general. In World War I, Pershing would become the commander of the armies from 1917 until 1918. It was in 1919 that he was promoted to the rank of General of the Armies of the United States.

Bastille Day

// August 29th, 2009 // No Comments » // News / Society

            Learning about Bastille Day trivia is an important part of getting a better understanding of international history and culture, as this is one of the most important days in history of the Nation of France. There are many facts about Bastille Day which the average person might be unaware of, but we’ll try and highlight some of the most prominent points which might be found in Bastille day quiz questions.

            First off, do you even know on which day Bastille day is celebrated? It takes place on the 14 of July, and is the national holiday of that country, similar to July 4th in America. The day was chosen because it was on July 14th in 1789 on which the Bastille was stormed during the French Revolution. The holiday is a commemoration of the Fete de la Federation which was held one year after that famous attack.

            An interesting bit of Bastille Day trivia is that during that day, the President of France has the authority to issue pardons to criminals. This has traditionally only been used in a minor capacity as a gesture of goodwill to the people of the country. In previous years presidents would typically use this as an opportunity to pardon traffic offenders or other minor offenders who were in no way actually posing a danger to the society. However, president Sarkozy appears to have discontinued this practice.

            The Bastille was stormed by the french people both for its tactical significance and as a gesture to what the fortress symbolized. They needed the gunpowder and ammunition contained within the fortress, but in addition they wanted to free political prisoners, many of whom had been their allies before they had been imprisoned in the fortress.  Prisoners held in the Bastille were often arrested based on the Royal word alone, with no formal charges or appeal process in place, just one of the many injustices of the monarchy that the people of France were beginning to rebel against.

            Although the Fete de la Federation was the official beginning of the holiday Bastille Day, the modern day celebration has much more modern origins, starting in 1878 with some unofficial parties which were honoring the republic government. It was in 1880 that Benjamin Raspail actually put forward a law which the assembly then passed in order the make the 14th of July the national Holiday of France, and has been celebrated ever since,  both in France and in other countries with a strong french population.

It also became clear how old the origin of Homo sapiens actually was, scientists discovered many fossils to suggest that people from the same gene pool as us were around.

The African Countryside was as said, very different to the desolate plains it is now. At the end of the Ice Age about 10,500 years ago, the Sahara desert was actually a very lush green meadow of land. Thanks to land like this, the options for farming would have been easy. Because of the positioning of Africa on our Globe, the area begun to dry up and Desertification took place. The populous would have moved to more lush grounds. By 3000 BC some civilizations across the world but specifically in Africa had started domesticating animals like horses and donkeys to do farming work.

Africa has been celebrated for its completely unique art. It would be impossible for you to find the amount of assorted arts and cultures in any other country compared to that of Africa. With so many peoples and different cultures everywhere you visit you will find a different type of art. The Africans have come to create a single piece of art that all the cultures have in common, the human figurine. They have created this in the image of those that have passed away, people that were or are still loved ones, or gods and chiefs. They were extremely adept at creating pieces of abstract art but are now creating pieces of Contemporary art~The African speciality was Abstract art, they created much of it, but recently they have become quite skilled at creating pieces of Contemporary art.
