The Buzz On: An-Ya (Joe Simpson’s Sexy Russian Recruit!)
// August 24th, 2009 // Music

Since our lives have clearly been on hold waiting for Papa Joe Simpson’s next contribution to the music industry (…), his last one of note being, of course, Ryan Cabrera‘s solo album (…), I’m pleased as punch to report there’s now light at the end of the tunnel: Papa Joe’s (latest?) Russian import An-ya has hit the U.S. with her debut solo album, Candy Shop.
An-ya already has a singing career in Russia — and if you know about it, I am very impressed with your knowledge of Russian pop girl groups — but she was eager to sign on up with Simpson’s EMI label, which is actually called Papa Joe Records.
Anyway, things to know about An-ya? Well, she has some kinda fierce eyebrows, she hails from Vladivostok (repreSENT!), and she taught herself English by listening to Britney and The Spice Girls. When An-ya was 18, she won a contest to become one third of the Russian girl group, Yes!… hence the experience.
Quick note to An-ya, though, and maybe Papa Joe didn’t tell you this, but this is like, what, the third single in recent memory called “Candy Shop”? We GET that “Candy Shop” is a metaphor and stuff, but Madonna was dishing it out long before you were, so you’re going to have to bring a little something else. But I’ll concede “Candy Shop” and “Nightlife” are pretty fun club numbers.
What I can’t condone? Whatever was happening here at the Teen Choice Awards.

(Yes, we get it. You have a lollipop.)
