Some senior citizens are complaining that they were left off the vaccination list during last year’s Swine Flu outbreak. Many who are opponents of Obama’s healthcare reform bill say that this is a direct result of the legislation. In July of 2009, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommended these guidelines for those who should first receive the H1N1 flu vaccine:
-Women who are pregnant or nursing
-People who work in healthcare or emergency first response
-Residents in assisted facilities
-Children and young adults from 6 months to 24 years
-People with pre-existing medical conditions that are 25 to 64 years of age
The concern generated from these guidelines is that nothing was mentioned about people over the age of 64. Many in the Republican Party used this oversight as a basis for their accusations about “Death Panels” being implemented by the Obama Administration. The Health and Human Services readily admitted that vaccination plans had changed after the unexpected spread of Swine Flu, but immediately asserted that any accusations of seniors being intentionally overlooked were completely unfounded. The HHS also took care to note that flu supply shortages were rampant and any demographic of people that may have been overlooked were simply victims of circumstance, not a coordinated campaign to exclude them.
It’s widely known within the medical community that the most vulnerable groups to Swine Flu and other types of influenza are younger people, pregnant women, healthcare workers, and people with underlying medical conditions. It’s not uncommon for health agencies to revise and rethink their approach to new and unexpected outbreaks of the flu virus. In these situations, those who are most at risk are given first priority. Seniors that resided in assisted facilities were given special attention, due to their close proximity to healthcare workers.
However, in light of these concerns, the government will be enabling “liability protection” for vaccine manufacturers and distributors. This means that no legal tort litigation can be pursued in federal court.

At the Peninsula School, the University of Cambridge, and the University of Michigan, researchers have conducted the first international comparative of cognitive function in older adults in the U.S. and Britain. The results showed that U.S. seniors preformed significantly better than their British counterparts.
The findings are surprising because Adults in the U.S. are known to be more susceptible to certain types of diseases that are associated with mental decline. The study compared 8,000 American seniors with a little over 5,000 British seniors aged 65 and older. The participants, most living in various assisted facilities in their respective countries, took exams of immediate and delayed recall of 10 common nouns including hotel, river, tree, skin, gold, village, baby and table. When they heard the words verbalized, they were asked to repeat as many as they could remember.
The researchers compared results based on age, gender, and education, as well as country. Also, participant’s health conditions, along with their risk factors and treatments, were considered as well. They also considered symptoms of depression, which has been known to be related to mental decline. U.S. adults, especially those living in the comfort of assisted facilities that greatly improve their quality of living, reported a significantly lower amount of depression than English adults which may have had a role in the U.S. advantage in the study.
The researchers also found that there were noticeable differences in alcohol consumption between the two groups. More than 50% of U.S. seniors claimed to have no alcohol consumption in contrast to only 15.5 of the British seniors. Previous research has shown that less alcohol consumption has contributed to a much higher level of cognitive function.

Pharmaceutical Combinations Are A Great Risk To The Elderly

A recent UK survey has discovered that senior citizens are exposed to a high risk of accidentally taking combinations of prescription drugs that could be lethal. Pharmacists at Robert Gordon University recently surveyed close to 700 elderly people between the ages 78 to 86, who were living in assisted living home facilities, and found that just under 20 percent were being educated on taking their drugs. The survey found that half the patients were consuming at least five medications per day, with one in five consuming at least 12 prescriptions every day.
The survey also found that 14 percent of seniors were taking medications that were considered to be highly toxic, such as anti-inflammatory and blood pressure drugs that have high risks of dangerous side effects.
The survey’s findings suggested that the frequent changes made to elderly people’s prescription doses and instructions only increase the chance of fatal drug combinations.
“This research proves that elderly people are at risk of being harmed by potentially lethal mixtures of medicines,” Kim Munro, a pharmacist at Robert Gordon University said. “Most people probably aren’t aware that they are in any danger. Further evaluation of such interventions is absolutely necessary in this area, especially for those people with minimal social support.”
Mike Adams, a consumer health advocate and holistic nutritionist, said, “The elderly are dangerously overmedicated. Not only are these medications failing to address underlying health concerns, they’re actually destroying the health and function of vital organs like the liver, kidneys, heart, and brain. What elderly people need is real nutrition, not toxic combinations of synthetic chemicals that just happen to generate profits for the world’s most profitable and influential corporations.”
Jonathan Ellis, poly manager at Help the Aged, says many senior citizens are brought to the emergency room for adverse drug reactions, and at the hospital, the situation is often worsened because they continue to adjust the patients drug prescriptions.

Good News For Senior Citizen Housing Funding

2010 is going to be a great year for senior citizens due to an increase in funding for the Section 202 program. Congress has approved a hike in the Section 202 program for the first time in six years. In 2010, the total increase will amount to $60 million.
The Section 202 program is a piece of legislation that provides grants and rental help through non-profit sponsors of low-income senior housing and assisted facilities. With the Section 202 program, a person will pay no more than 30%of their income on rent. Last year saw an increase in Section 202 implementation, with more increases likely before the fiscal year 2010 ends.
Along with this legislation, there are many other ways seniors can help with their housing and assisted facilities residencies. One example is the Low-Income Housing Energy Assistance Program, which is designed to help seniors pay their energy bills. Just like with the Section 202 program, the government is increasing its funding of this program as well. Applicants to the program must submit an application for capital advance, along with a “Request for Fund Reservation”. Applications must be submitted to a local field office that has jurisdiction over the area where the project will be implemented. Basic program requirements must be met by those who are selected.
Why is the government being so generous? It’s simply due to the recognition that there are more and more elderly adults in our population than ever before, many of them living on fixed incomes. It’s these people who are amongst the most in need of help climbing out of the current financial downturn.
